In a nutshell
Stop-and-Wait sends a single frame, then stops and waits for the receiver's acknowledgement before sending the next. If the ACK doesn't come back in time, a timer fires and the sender resends. It's the simplest reliable protocol, but only one frame is ever in flight, so a long-distance link sits idle most of the time waiting for replies.
